The only thing that will convince the government to get rid of vacancy decontrol and maybe even to freeze rent is if it hurts them at the ballot box!
Michael Bryant resigned his seat in St. Paul's and the government has to have a byelection within another 4 months.
It is a riding with a very high tenant population.
With no incumbent if the Liberals lose and it is at least partially due to the tenant vote McGuinty and his gang will be forced to listen, with a general election coming in only another 2 years.
When McGuinty's Liberal government was bringing in their RTA they had all of their members including Bryant distribute flyers to tenant households saying they were bringing in "real rent controls." And that "rents will be lowered." Of course tenants now realize that was not the case. 
If tenants organize in St. Paul's riding now and swamp McGuinty's office (not letting him divert the issue through his minister Jim Watson,) with demands to get rid of vacancy decontrol and to freeze rents until the recession is over, we may not get the rent freeze but they will have to get rid of vacancy decontrol if they want to win reelection in 2011.
Let's start organizing the tenants of St. Paul's NOW!
Demand a rent freeze. Demand an end to vacancy decontrol.

A great way to organize all these tenants would be to get city councillors Joe Mihevc and Michael Walker to organize lots of tenant meetings throughout their wards with the experts from the Federation.
It would be a great way to get the tenant vote out. The city really should be putting in some resources into this.
Now would be the time to start well before any byelection and it would help improve the influence of tenants leading up to next year's municipal election.
